Jackson County, Florida, is known for its family-friendly rivers and waterways, rolling pines and agritourism, and history that spans generations. But if you look below the surface, you’ll find that our caves and caverns are unmatched encounters with natural wonders in an entirely different dimension.
Take a Cave Tour through the Florida Caverns State Park in Jackson County

Jackson County is home to the only state park to offer public cave tours, Florida Caverns State Park is truly a rare gem below sea level. Florida Caverns State Park is situated on 1,300 acres that’s been forged over thousands of years. It continues to be a top attraction in the area through recent decades and has even been awarded the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for 2024! The caverns are air-filled, allowing you to hike in 65-degree weather year-round, as you become surrounded by breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, columns, and soda straws. You might even see some cute bats in the caves, too! Through twists and turns in the route, you’ll be up to 65 feet below the ground. The tour through the caves allows for enough room to comfortably walk through, with some areas where you can expect to crouch through spaces that are between 4 and 5 feet tall. Be sure to check out the other caves available throughout the hiking trails, too!
Cave tours are available seven days per week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Outside this window (before Memorial Day and after Labor Day), tours are not offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Be sure to check out the Florida Caverns State Park Gift Shop website for most up to date tours and schedules.
Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop after exploring the caves at the Florida Caverns State Park for trinkets and other souvenirs to bring home after your time in this one-of-a-kind geological spectacle. A gem mining station where you can scavenge your own unique stones and jewels is also a hit with patrons of all ages.

Immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters of Jackson Blue Springs, a diver’s paradise in Jackson County
To experience another element in your caves exploration, add water – to go cave diving, that is. Jackson County is home to Jackson Blue Springs is an incredible main spring on Merritt’s Mill Pond. The only first magnitude spring in Jackson County, even in a drought, churns out 10 million gallons of water daily, creating lots of aeration for resident fish. Immerse yourself in open water, then a somewhat narrow opening transports you to the wonderous cave, where the dust you may find in air-filled caves becomes a playground of glistening, pristine water. To have full access while cave diving in Jackson Blue Springs, you’ll need to have diving certifications to dive in open water and an additional certification for cave diving. Interested divers can contact Cave Adventurers for more information on diving access.
If you’d rather stay above water, Jackson Blue Springs is also a great place to swim (yes, with a diving board!) from 9 AM to 6:30 PM Monday – Friday and 9 AM to 7:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Additional hours can be found by visiting their website. Covered pavilions, grills for picnics, and concession stands provide all the ingredients for a low-key day on the water. Kayak and paddling rentals or tours are also available at the ‘Yak Shack in the park.

Owned by world-renowned diver Edd Sorenson, known for numerous rescues of lost or trapped divers in caves all over the world, you’re in the best of hands as you prepare to swish through this underwater marvel.
Caves along the Chipola River
It’s almost as if there’s another road map just for under-the-surface fun in Jackson County. At nearly 100 miles long, the Chipola River is an aquatic influence with its own caves not to be missed. Hop on the trail system at the Hinson Conservation and Recreation Area. Around 0.8 miles into your hike, you’ll come across one of the many caves called the Alamo cave, where light shines through on either side. From the Chipola River, you will find the well-known Ovens caves near Hinson Conservation. The abundant vegetation in the area makes the Ovens best accessible by paddling or boating on the river but be mindful of recent rainfall which could seriously change the tone of your visit. And don’t forget a flashlight or head lamp!

Apalachee Wildlife Management Area
The Apalachee Wildlife Management Area is a great outdoor recreation destination year round on the east side of Jackson County, just north of Sneads, Florida. Hurricane Michael significantly impacted the 7,952 acre management area on October 10, 2018, but clean up efforts have allowed recreational access to return and is enjoyed by many locals and visitors throughout the year. No camping is available on the property, but Three Rivers State Park just south of the WMA offers primitive and full-facility camping, where you can enjoy views of both Florida and Georgia from the west side of Lake Seminole.

activities to be found, the Apalachee Wildlife Management Area is perfect for
nature adventurists and is accessible year-round. For something a little more hands on, test
your fishing skills on nearby Lake Seminole.
This 37,500 acre lake is well-known for monster bass that will give an
adrenaline rush to any angler – novice or professional. Jackson County is also home to some of the
best hunting land in the state of Florida. If you’re looking for an
unforgettable experience, Bontrager Whitetails in Marianna will surely deliver. This hunting preserve is a definite
one-of-a-kind in the area, offering the only guided hunting trips for trophy
whitetail deer.
History plays a huge role in Jackson County and doesn’t go unnoticed when searching for adventures in the area. Spanish influence from the 1600s has been preserved and incorporated into the Spanish Heritage Geocaching Trail. Perfect for a day-long adventure. The geocaching trail takes participants around the county to some pretty impressive places. Pathtags can also be collected as a reward for successfully completing the trail.
Of course it wouldn’t be Florida without water, which Jackson County has plenty of. Home to over 70 springs, the county has endless opportunities for thrill-seeking adventurers. There are multiple rivers, creeks, and swimming holes available to the public. Adventure lovers of all ages will be in awe of the springs, especially the Cliffside ShangriLa. Most of the springs, with the exception of first-magnitude Jackson Blue, are accessible only by boat. This makes Jackson County an adventure filled heaven for paddlers. The Chipola River winds its way down to the Apalachicola Bay, providing miles of opportunities to seek out springs along the way. After all, the gently flowing river is fed by over 70 springs in its multi-county path, and 63 of them are on Jackson County turf. Don’t forget your mask and snorkel! Spring Creek and Chipola River have been known to hide sharks teeth and arrowheads from centuries past in their soil.
Jackson County also provides something that no other place in Florida does – guided dry-cave tours. The cavern system at Florida Caverns State Park starts 60 feet underground and takes visitors on a cool trip through the well-preserved formations.
