Marianna’s oldest cemetery, Riverside was established as part of the original city plan prepared by founders Robert and Anna Maria Beveridge in 1827. Mrs. Beveridge died just a few years after Marianna was founded and is buried in an unmarked grave here. Others buried in the old section include both Union and Confederate soldiers killed in the Battle of Marianna, Armstrong Purdee (Jackson County’s first African-American attorney), veterans, business and political leaders, and hundreds of others who played important roles in the history of Marianna, Jackson County and Florida.
