A stop on the Jackson County Spanish Heritage Trail, this interpretive kiosk tells the story of the Fernandez de Florencia Raid of 1677. Alarmed over continuing attacks on Apalachee settlements around Mission San Luis (Tallahassee), Captain Juan Fernandez de Florencia authorized a raid against the Chisca (Yuchi) Indians in today’s Walton and Okaloosa Counties. Carried out by a Christian Apalachee Militia, the raid passed through Jackson County and its route carried it across the site of what is now Cottondale. The kiosk tells the story of the raid and its results!
