The oldest standing home in Jackson County, the historic Erwin House has a rich and noteworthy history. Built in the 1830’s by John A. Syfrett, the home was a common stopping point for travelers along the old Fort Road. The home takes its name from Col. John M.F. Erwin who moved in with his wife Georgia C. Bryan in 1861. Erwin was an officer in the state militia, a state legislator, and a merchant. The house was changed over the years as families came and went, but retains much of its simple beauty. The house is not open to the public, but can be viewed from the sidewalk along Fort Road. A unique feature of the yard is the old limestone well near the intersection of State Highway 71 and Fort Road.
