  1. Jackson County is Florida’s third oldest county, it was established in 1822 by an act of the Territorial Legislature. The original county spanned west from the Choctawhatchee River to east to Suwannee River, and north in Alabama and Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico.
  2. The county is named after General Andrew Jackson who traveled through here during the Seminole Wars and moved here after the war.
  3. Marianna was founded by Scottish native Robert Beveridge in 1827, and became the county seat in 1829. Originally Webbville was the county seat.
  4. Lake Seminole is a 37,500 reservoir  juncture  of the Florida, Georgia, and Alabama state lines. It was formed at the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers in 1957. It is known for its excellent bass fishing.
  5. Jackson County is the only county in Florida to border two other states, Alabama and Georgia, and borders Eastern and Central time zones, Jackson County is in CST.
  6. Jackson County is abundant with air-filled and water caves, the most well known caves are the Florida Caverns State Park. Hinson Conservation and Recreational Area is home to The Ovens touching the Chipola River and Alamo cave on the four mile hiking trail. Blue Springs Recreational Area and Merritt’s Mill Pond are home to six water caves loved by international cave divers.
  7. Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna is the only state park in Florida to offer cave tours to the public. The caves were discovered and built 1933 as part of the New Deal and by members of  the CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps. Andrew Jackson crossed the Natural Bridge in the park during the Seminole Wars.
  8. Two rare species of birds are only found in Jackson County.
  9. Daniel Boone traveled through northern Jackson County. He crossed the Chattahoochee River at today’s Neal Landing to explore the area.
  10. The Chipola River is the largest tributary to the Apalachicola River, it is known for its shoal banks and is ideal for kayaking and canoeing, it flows 55 miles through Jackson County.
  11. The Chipola River has four non-motorized launches to access the river.
  12. A number of rare and endangered plant species can be seen along the banks of the Chipola River.
  13. The Chipola and Apalachicola rivers are state-designated paddling trails. Both are located in Jackson County.
  14. Jackson County waterways are designated Blueways Community, which is a partnership of Florida Paddling Trails.
  15. Blue Springs Recreational Area is a first magnitude spring fed recreation area. It is located at the head of Merritt’s Mill Pond, a 202 acre crystal clear pond. It is a popular spot for swimming, cave diving, boating.
  16. Spring Creek is located at the base of Merritt’s Mill Pond, It winds two miles and feeds in to the Chipola River. It is known for its tubing, canoe and kayaking.
  17. More than 100 historical sites are ranging from historical homes, buildings, cemeteries, and the Old Spanish Trail.
  18. The last antebellum home was built in Greenwood, Fl, called Great Oaks.
  19. Spanish explorers, soldiers and missionaries explored Jackson County more than 300 years ago. Sites from the Spanish era are part of the Jackson County Spanish Heritage Trail, a 150 mile driving tour.
  20. The Old Spanish Trail travels through Jackson County as part of the St. Augustine-Pensacola Road. Sections of the trail and stops are included in the Jackson County Spanish Heritage Trail.
  21. Jackson County is home to Florida’s most haunted bridge. Bellamy Bridge is said to be haunted by the ghost of Elizabeth Bellamy, a bride whose wedding dress supposedly caught fire by a burning candle and jumped off the bridge to extinguish it only to jump to her death.
  22. Jackson County is said to have many haunted houses. Paranormal investigation groups have focused much attention on the historic Russ House and visitor center. Free tours are given during business hours.
  23. Marianna resident John Milton served as Governor of confederate Florida during the Civil War. He loved the beauty in Jackson County and owned a large plantation called Sylvania Plantation near Blue Springs. He is buried at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Marianna.
  24. A small yet important battle took place in Jackson County during the Civil War. The Battle of Marianna spanned several miles of land and culminated the deepest penetration of Florida by Union troops during the entire war. A walking tour brochure is available at the historic Russ House and Visitor Center.
  25. Civil rights leader and journalist T. Thomas Fortune was born in Jackson County and held his first job at The Marianna Courier.
  26. Caroline L. Hentz, 19th century novelist, lived her later years in Jackson County and was laid to rest at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Cemetery. Her son Thaddeus was wounded while fighting near her grave during the Battle of Marianna.
  27. Actress Faye Dunaway was born in Jackson County in Bascom, FL.
